The main campus is situated against a dramatic backdrop of steep mountains at the confluence of the Gilgit and Hunza rivers. Before the university was established, students from Gilgit-Baltistan had to travel either within the country or abroad to pursue their undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate studies. This resulted in considerable hardships for them. However, now they have convenient access to university education right at their doorstep.
